Donald Fraser's papers consist of his letters to his wife while serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. The mostly typed letters document his training while in Montana and California, but primarily are from his service in England and after his unit, the 188th Field Artillery, landed at Normandy on D-Day plus six and fought their way through France, Belgium and Germany. The letters give wonderful insight into the life of a solder, his daily life, major military operations and the stress war places on families.

Donald Fraser was born at Fargo, N.D. where he grew up. Her married Irene Graber in 1938. In 1941 his North Dakota National Guard unit was activated and he served in the European Theater, rising to the rank of major. He served in the 188th Field Artillery. He returned to Fargo and also served in the Korean War. In 1951 he was appoined Fargo Postmaster and retained the appointment until 1971. He died Oct. 5, 1973 at Fargo.
